Catherine Deneuve aside, you can pretty much thank Julie Delpy for keeping the American obsession with French women alive and kicking. There’s a reason we liked the 1995 Linklater-directed indie rom com Before Sunrise so much—Delpy’s Celine is hot, sophisticated, and witty, not one of those Katherine Heigl-type heroines who mistake tripping down some stairs for “being cute.” This month, Before Midnight, the insanely anticipated—it’s been nine freakin’ years!—third installment of the series drops in on Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine, now in their early 40s with kids, and working through some Who’s Afraid of Virgina Woolf-level marital strife while summering in Greece. If that sounds like a turnoff, let us remind you there’s still plenty of bantering and philosophizing on postcard-worthy European side streets, and Delpy is charming as ever. That latter part is evidenced quite convincingly here.

http://daxtumbler.tumblr.com/post/45876994574/my-fathers-horniness#_=_

http://daxtumbler.tumblr.com/post/45876994574/my-fathers-horniness#_=_

literaryjukebox:

I will never be a brain surgeon, and I will never play the piano like Glenn Gould.

But what keeps me up late at night, and constantly gives me reason to fret, is this: I don’t know what I don’t know. There are universes of things out there — ideas, philosophies, songs, subtleties, facts, emotions — that exist but of which I am totally and thoroughly unaware. This makes me very uncomfortable. I find that the only way to find out the fuller extent of what I don’t know is for someone to tell me, teach me or show me, and then open my eyes to this bit of information, knowledge, or life experience that I, sadly, never before considered.

Afterward, I find something odd happens. I find what I have just learned is suddenly everywhere: on billboards or in the newspaper or SMACK: Right in front of me, and I can’t help but shake my head and speculate how and why I never saw or knew this particular thing before. And I begin to wonder if I could be any different, smarter, or more interesting had I discovered it when everyone else in the world found out about this particular obvious thing. I have been thinking a lot about these first discoveries and also those chance encounters: those elusive happenstances that often lead to defining moments in our lives.

[…]

I once read that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. I fundamentally disagree with this idea. I think that doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the definition of hope. We might keep making mistakes but the struggle gives us a sense of empathy and connectivity that we would not experience otherwise. I believe this empathy improves our ability to see the unseen and better know the unknown.

Lives are shaped by chance encounters and by discovering things that we don’t know that we don’t know. The arc of a life is a circuitous one. … In the grand scheme of things, everything we do is an experiment, the outcome of which is unknown.

You never know when a typical life will be anything but, and you won’t know if you are rewriting history, or rewriting the future, until the writing is complete.

This, just this, I am comfortable not knowing.

Been four days since I posted what I thought to be a cute photo of my dog being her usual lazy self, she could barely lift her head. I thought she was just tired from a walk or too full from a meal, being the self-indulgent Beagle that she is.

What we thought to be just a bout of laziness happened to be an onset of something serious. The following day our dog refused to eat anything. She had diarrhea and constantly vomited. We took her to the vet yesterday. She tested positive for parvo virus. Do not read further if you don’t like dogs or think that giving that much love to a dog is ridiculous.

An emotional wreck, I was. The vet said 5 out of 10 dogs are able to pull through. I don’t like uncertainties. Never have. That grey area, that 50% chance of my dog not surviving stabs me in the chest.

Yesterday was an ordeal. The vet said the most they can do is give supportive treatment- they can keep the dog from further dehydration and secondary infections but to give a cure like what Paracetamol is to a fever, a specific medicine, they won’t be able to give. A pet owner can only hope for the best that his/her pet’s immune system is strong enough to fight the lethal virus.

Our vet recommended an animal hospital where our Beagle can be confined. It was a fully functioning hospital with consultation rooms, a fully-equipped laboratory, and an isolation room. It was at the isolation room where we left Daphne, our 2-year old Beagle. What I felt when I left her there I couldn’t even write about.

We ordered this one medicine from a local supplier. They have it shipped from the states and have limited stocks I had to bargain and negotiate like crazy for them to have it delivered to the hospital on-day. The crazy things one can do for a person, I wouldn’t mind doing for a dog. This medicine suggested by the vet is not generally accepted in their field yet. It is more of an alternative medicine, the drug being herbal. The success stories are high though, she said.

We are trying to keep our hopes high. All these for our little, though slightly-overweight hound.

Last week at the IMMAP Summit, Maria Ressa spoke about the effects of social media on the brain, and OMG! I finally understood why I can’t seem to stay the heck away from Facebook and Twitter!

It occurred to me yesterday as I was typing yet another another “LOL” on Twitter - while not actually laughing at all, much less out loud - that LOL is probably the most rampant lie on the Internet.

Today is one of my dear friends’ birthday. I’ve graduated from blogging and this account is mostly for re-blogs and photos of pop culture and what-not but today, this post is dedicated to a friend I’ve known for God knows how long. For me the best kind of friendship is the one built in your childhood when you are stripped naked of all pretensions. Bound together by your innocence and idealism, there are no hidden agendas, just pure friendship.

Sharing the speech I made on her wedding day. :)

Let me start off by saying, today is my best friend’s wedding.

Excuse me for the mushy term “best friend”. The term’s overrated. But yes, I’ve known her since we were 9. Back in school, we’d tell everyone we’re cousins. And people didn’t question because aside from sharing the same last name, we had the same interests. We were both very opinionated and very idealistic. And we both liked guys in khakis and pocket shirts and white sneakers. Or anything that completes the Ely Buendia profile. ;p

Let me also share that our wedding dates are just a month apart. I got married in November. And we almost went through the wedding preparations together. After 20 years, it’s surprising how we undeniably still share the same taste in a lot of things. Thank God, we didn’t end up having the same wedding song. =) Or that would really freak us out. =)

Buens, it’s official- we no longer have the same last names. You are now a Mrs. Rivera. I’m not in the position to give you marriage tips. So I only have this to say— Look after each other. Be nice to each other. Listen to Frank Sinatra or Eraserheads (?) songs together. And LOVE. Love each other FOREVER.

This almost happened yesterday. True story.

Okay, I’m just being an idiot again. :)

But seriously… dashes are important sometimes. Also, proper syntax. Because you never know how people will read things.

Now imagine if that notice had been worded differently…

We love Jennifer! we just do. She recently took a trip with boyfriend Justin Theroux to lovely, lovely Paris, and after a change of clothes after landing, Jennifer became city chic in a matter of a camera snap.

Jennifer chose to roam the romantic city in a classic-slash-cool look: a navy…

mietteshoppe:

Look at me! Look at me! I have a “Thom Browne”...

buffalobound:

Look at me! Look at me! I have a “Thom Browne” watch strap. Maybe menswear editors will like me now!

Doubt it.

Watches - they’re an extremely critical part of a man’s style and show maturity to your peers. A watch is a great accessory to own and have to help add a little touch of yourself into your outfits. The watch shown in the picture above, it looks expensive as fuck, it was a whole $45. People believe you have to drop something cray on a nice watch when that isn’t the case at all. You have to drop something cray on a QUALITY watch but you can get something functional and aesthetically pleasing on the cheap. I’ll break it down for you:

You’ll mostly be fucking with 2 types of watches, quartz and automatic. A quartz watch is basically just a watch that has a battery in it and “ticks” when turned on. This is the watch you will have to bring into the repair dude to get another battery put in which is a fucking hassle. NEVER pay more than $60 for a quartz watch no matter what it can do. I don’t give a fuck if that thing can make you a sandwich, finger your girl, take your calculus final, and tell you what time it is simultaneously, it’s not worth it. The automatic watch is the watch you should shoot to get if you have the money because it will last you a lifetime. The reason why you don’t have to bring in an automatic watch for a new battery is because it literally uses your motion to help power the watch. You can tell if a watch is automatic by looking at the “seconds” hand and noticing if it moves continuously without making a “tick” sound.

There’s 2 types of watches that are hot right now and represent each category. The quartz Timex and the automatic Submariner but to be more exact a Seiko. These watches are very good quality and can’t be beat for the price.

The Timex above (mine) only costed me $35 and you can sometimes get them cheaper. Here’s a similar one. What I love about mine is that I can change the strap of it to any color I decide. I just got this strap but as you can tell from my previous posts I had one that was mostly red that I didn’t like too much. You can grab some straps for $11.95 here. Be sure to check out the “also viewed” section for more color options. I personally love this one.

Now, for Seiko submariners you can just hit up your nearest Macy’s or check out Amazon. You could also check out this great guy I learned about from Four-Pins called Yobokies (Seiko boy backwards) that will make you your own submariner that will be custom to you in every way. They should run you about $180 - $250.

iamoverdressed:
